After his 6-year stint with the XVII Airborne Corps in Ft. Bragg, Randy moved to NYC to study acting. He worked consistently in film, known for roles in Public Enemies, Salvation Boulevard, 20th Century Women, Kajillionaire, The Forgotten and TV shows such as Sex & the City, Third Watch, Medical Investigation, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order, Dark Wall and most recently, SEAL TEAM.
Randy married Erin Raftery in 2009 and they have two daughters, which represent the most important aspect of his life. He never met his father but through research found a book, Shelter From The Storm, which clarified who his father was. Becoming a man without a father-figure and exploring what it means to “man up” inspired Randy to get more involved in men’s mental health issues, especially for veterans.
Randy volunteers as the Veteran Mental Health Coordinator for NAMI-WLA and also leads the HOMEFRONT program, which offers wellness education programs for families, caregivers and friends of military service members. Prior to joining NAMIWLA, Randy traveled the State of California, connecting veterans with farmers for the Farmer Veteran Coalition. He designed the California Initiative, which eventually became the FVC-California chapter. He remains very active at the West LA VA Center, which is among the largest in the country.
For the American Heart Association, Randy led a gardening program into a national powerhouse. Teaching Gardens started at 10 schools in LA’s most at-risk schools. Connecting inner-city children to better nutrition, the program began by hiring veterans to help kids learn about growing food. The pilot program, led by Randy, expanded into 500 schools nationwide. Randy was featured in the Huffington Post as one of five military veterans who have made an impact nationally as civilians.
He also took part in a Ford Hero campaign and has had numerous articles and awards for his advocacy work.
